Things may feel hard right now but this is not the end.

Anxiety and OCD can feel overwhelming. It follows you around like a backpack full of rocks, getting heavier and heavier as you continue to go along. This growing weight can be crushing, making it hard to live the life you want. Tasks may begin to take longer or no longer be possible at all. It can change your mood and how you interact with others, making you become more irritable or withdrawn. You may find yourself with a constant nagging thought that pesters you until you find yourself caving to its demands.

These nagging thoughts lie to you. They tell you that things will go bad if you don’t listen to them, that you’re not enough, and that you need to do more. Ultimately these thoughts begin to hold you hostage. You get stuck in the “what ifs” and doing whatever you can to meet their demands, meanwhile the world continues to pass on by.

You are not overreacting, your distress is real:

  • These thoughts exist for a reason, they are designed to protect us from harm

  • Sometimes our brains get confused and misjudge situations

  • We must retrain our brains, to teach them to add to our lives instead of weighing us down

Common questions about therapy for Anxiety and OCD

  • Together in session, we will use a variety of tools and techniques that go beyond just identifying the symptoms and we will get to the root of the problem. We will explore the connection between emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. The techniques learned will help you cope with feelings of distress and learn to be in the present. This may include recognizing when we are having unhelpful thoughts and learning to challenge and reframe them. Practicing acceptance and mindfulness techniques is another technique that may be used as it can improve our ability to be focused on the present, be nonjudgmental, and reduce how often we future trip. Through regular practice you will work to reteach your brain and embrace new ways to go about life.

When treating OCD we will use both exposure and response prevention (ERP) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). We will identify the core fears surrounding your thoughts. These core fears are what drive us to perform compulsive behaviors and can hold us hostage. With OCD, there is no negotiating with it, it will try to explain away any rationale we give it. Therefore, the most widely used treatment for OCD is exposure techniques. These will be done at your comfort level and will be individualized to your fears and struggles. As we face exposures together, this will create habituation, meaning the feelings of distress will lessen over time. We must also work on the response prevention part, and this is where ACT comes in. With ACT we recognize the thoughts we are having, what they are telling us to do, and learn to sit with them. By sitting with our thoughts and feelings instead of acting on them this allows the exposure activities to work better and decreases the anxiety and depression we feel from OCD.

  • Anxiety can be experienced in a variety of ways. Some individuals struggle with more general anxiety such as constantly worrying or it can be more specific such as being nervous around others or certain things such as heights. With anxiety it can cause an individual to have trouble relaxing, trouble concentrating, and going out of their way to avoid what is causing them distress.

With Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) a person also experiences unwanted and intrusive thoughts. In order to improve or prevent these thoughts an individual will feel the urge to perform certain actions repeatedly. This can include things such as ruminating on the thoughts, asking for reassurance, checking to ensure nothing bad happened, trying to avoid things that your thoughts tell you are contaminated, and performing specific rituals or behaviors. OCD becomes a problem when it takes up a lot of your time and changes your day-to-day life.
